Terry Burke Maxwell Honored for Professional Longevity
Terry Burke Maxwell, with her husband Arthur D. Maxwell, Jr., is publisher and owner of The Maxwell Group
Carmichael, CA March 1, 2010 /Education PR News/ -- Terry Burke Maxwell, Author and Publisher for The Maxwell Group, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership, and excellence in all aspects of educational publishing.
Born to a family of teachers, it was only natural for Terry Burke Maxwell to become a professional educator. After teaching in parochial grammar schools in both the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles, Terry joined the Addison-Wesley Publishing Company in Menlo Park, California. For ten years she was immersed in writing, editing, and developing elementary math textbooks, supplements, and teacher resource material.
Terry Burke Maxwell then moved into the computer industry, working as a technical writer and trainer for large, well known computer companies. During this time she used spare time to write math supplements and to teach a re-entry arithmetic course at Evergreen Community College in San Jose. Between employments, Terry also substituted at various public and private schools in Santa Clara County, continuing her interest in computers as a hobby. Also, Terry wrote and distributed the first printing of Arithmetic In English for her community college students some of whom struggled with math aversion or who were English learners struggling with the vocabulary of arithmetic. Terry also authored "Math Discoveries about Fractions and Decimals," published by Ideal School Supply in 1996. This middle school workbook is still popular for its activity approach to concept development, and is among titles available for sale on the Internet.
In 1994 Terry Burke Maxwell and Joan Elizabeth Hughes co-authored the innovative teacher resource book, and The Maxwell Group published it. This well-received collection of activities combined curriculum objectives with computer learning objectives. Concurrently Terry also created and published one of the first Kodak CDs suitable for elementary educational purposes. With one hundred plus photos, educators used The CompuResource Book and the CompuResource Photo CD (with its small booklet of additional ideas) to integrate familiar classroom activities with the mastery of personal computer skills. Terry and Joan presented this well received publication at teacher and computer conferences, especially with Computer Using Educators.
Upon relocating to the Sacramento County of California, and enjoying semi-retirement, Terry Burke Maxwell and Arthur D. Maxwell Jr. have re-established The Maxwell Group. The current inventory includes "Arithmetic In English" (slightly revised) and "The CompuResource Book" (a straightforward reprinting with new cover). Two other math workbooks provide paper and pencil skill sets for fractions and decimals, completing the current list of math titles.
Motivated by a love for learning as well as staying curious about new perspectives on math education, computers in education, or even more general topics, both Terry and Arthur encourage other retired professionals to publish their stories or creative ideas. The Maxwell Group invites manuscripts or suggestions for collaborative publishing.
Terry Burke Maxwell is a graduate of San Jose State University, California, with a master of education specializing in instructional technology. She previously earned a bachelor of arts in mathematics from Immaculate Heart College, Los Angeles, California. Her professional affiliations, past or current, include the California Mathematics Council, the National Association of Professional Women, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and Computer Using Educators.
Arthur D. Maxwell, Jr. is a graduate of Santa Clara University, California, with a degree of master of business administration. He earned a bachelor of science in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. His professional history includes designing and implementing computer systems for financial, logistical, and inventory applications, evolving from batch processing to real time transactions.
