Amahl and the Night Visitors, Opera! Opens at the Hoover Theater in San Jose, Friday December 16
Kindness and Love Abound in Holiday Classic Featuring Students of Njeri's Morning Glory School and Art Center
SAN JOSE, CA, November 27, 2011 /Education PR News/ -- More than 50 years ago on Christmas Eve, the very first Amahl and the Night Visitors' production was introduced. Since then this opera has played to audiences around the world making it one of the most important and memorable holiday classic s. Now Silicon Valley audiences may experience it for themselves at the Hoover Theater, 1635 Park Avenue, Friday December at 7 PM. Tickets for this performance are $10 for adults and $5 for youth. Tickets may be purchased at http://njerismorningglory.com/amahl.
The story's message is one of love and kindness told from the perspective of a poor disabled boy's encounter one night with three wise and mysterious men. This year's inspiring production is directed by Njeri McGillicuddy, Head of the Njeri's Morning Glory School and Art Center, a Waldorf-inspired school.
Njeri directed the opera keeping its composer Gian Carlo Menotti's original inspiration in mind. Menotti who was born in 1911 in Northern Italy lived with and experienced being lame until he was miraculously cured following a pilgrimage to a nearby sanctuary of Sacro Monte. His experience was the genesis of Amahl and the Night Visitor. Menotti went on to compose more than 20 operas, earn a Pulitzer Prize, and found The Festival of Two Worlds. He lives today in Scotland.
"My love for this opera was immediate, from the moment I first experienced it as a student in my home in Kenya," said Njeri who has produced this production during the holiday season for the last four years in the Silicon Valley area. "I knew back then when I saw the opera, and shortly afterwards chosen to play the lead role as Amahl, that one day I wanted to present this opera and introduce it to others ... I'm now seeing this day come to fruition!" she said.
With more than 45 students attending Njeri's Morning Glory, each one as well as faculty and parents will play a significant role in this year's production of the opera. All proceeds will go toward the support of the school which offers a unique and unparalleled educational experience, curriculum and culture which adheres to the Waldorf principles.
"Our school offers the broader community an opportunity to educate their children for the 21st century and into the future in an environment that is highly holistic, thoughtful, and engaged," added Njeri. "Our production of Amahl and the Night Visitors," is one example of these principals coming together in the most creative way possible, and we want parents to bring their families to experience this opera. By doing so they'll also get to experience our wonderful school and its amazing student body and reap the benefits of receiving a memorable message told through the opera, a message very much needed today."
Njeri's Morning Glory School and Art Center is a nonprofit educational organization offering parents of children within the San Jose-Silicon Valley region a dynamic educational experience and curriculum steeped in Waldorf principles. Currently, the school's teacher-child ratio is 2:10, offering instruction in grades K-4 this year. The school fill expand to 5th grade next September and be a full elementary by then.
