Susan Madison Smith, Ed.D., MSPH, Recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for Excellence in Educational Public Health and Safety
Dr. Susan Smith is a recognized authority on disaster response, emergency management, and outdoor recreation safety
BLOOMINGTON, IN, May 17, 2011 /Education PR News/ -- Dr. Susan Madison Smith, Associate Professor of Safety and Health Education and Director of the OSHA Heartland Training Institute and Education Center at Indiana University, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in educational public health and safety.
An active proponent of health protection and safety training, Dr. Smith excels at helping companies save money by implementing effective infrastructures that reduce injury in the workplace. "Every injury you have adds a tremendous cost to the company. This is due to the cost of worker's compensation, the person's health care expenses and the cost of replacing the worker while he or she is out of work," she says. "If an employer can keep a worker healthy, free from an injury or chronic disease, then a business is more efficient and profitable...If an employee learns to use safety practices and work in a safe environment, it is also hoped that he or she will also use safe practices at home."
Dr. Smith strives to promote her cause through her association with Indiana University, where she serves as associate professor of safety and health education, and as director of the Heartland OSHA Training and Education Center. A recognized authority on disaster response, emergency management and outdoor recreation safety, she teaches graduate courses on injury prevention, the improvement of emergency preparedness and the evacuation of high-risk groups. Dr. Smith derives the deepest fulfillment from seeing her former students put their education to practice. "Learning about the positive actions my former students have taken to improve health protection and safety in the workplace, community and home is one of the most rewarding parts of my job," she shares.
Published multiple times, Dr. Smith contributed to the book, "The Safety Professionals Hand Book: Technical Applications." She wrote the sections, "Emergency Preparedness: Applied Science and Engineering" and "10-Point Check List for Emergency Preparedness." The latter section was developed with the help of several of her students and was used for a safety workshop at The University of Tennessee that she coordinated.
Dr. Smith received a Doctor of Education in health education, concentration in public health and safety, from The University of Tennessee. Prior to joining Indiana University, she served UT for 13 years as coordinator of graduate safety and health programs, and as director of the UT Safety Center. She also earned a Master of Science in public health from The University of North Carolina and a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry from Berry College. A hard worker from a young age, she attended Berry as a working student and managed to become its first female student government president.
In addition to her academic qualifications, Dr. Smith holds a Level III certification in homeland security. She is a member and a former board representative of both the National Safety Council and The International Emergency Management Society. Honors of which she is a recipient include induction into Cambridge Who's Who as a VIP member in 2010 and a Distinguished Service to Safety Award from the National Safety Council. Additionally, she received an award in 2008 from the International Emergency Management Society for a research paper that she co-authored with her students titled, "Disaster Response: Community Mental Health Service Capacity in the United States."
