Joanne Higgins Anchors her Compassion in Special Education

Ms. Higgins became a special education teacher after experiencing her son's struggle with Autism and the witnessing of her twin sister's experience with cerebral palsy while growing up.

BELLEROSE, NY, June 1, 2011 /Education PR News/ -- Joanne Higgins, Special Education Teacher for the New York City Department of Education, District 75, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in special education.

After gaining knowledge and experience caring for her twin sister, who has cerebral palsy, Ms. Higgins volunteered at several institutions in the 1970's. Before she became an educator, she was sidetracked with a career at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 17 years. She left MetLife to start a family. Ms. Higgins went back into Special Education after her second son was diagnosed with Autism. This event brought back memories of her earlier compassion for volunteering for those in need. After volunteering for Early Intervention (EI) and the Committee on Preschool Education (CPSE), Ms. Higgins realized that she wanted to pursue Special Education as a career and become a teacher. For the last 13 years, she has demonstrated unrelenting patience and kindheartedness in her quest to facilitate the learning process for students with Autism, syndromes, cerebral palsy, language delays, and learning and emotional disabilities. Throughout Ms. Higgins' paraprofessional and teaching career, she has used Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS). She is filled with immense gratification, as she shares in her students' joy when they meet with success.

Ms. Higgins earned a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and General Rducation. Upon the fruition of her degree, she began pursuing a Master of Science in Special Education, which she has completed. Ms. Higgins maintains affiliation with Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi, Psi Chi and the Golden Key International Honour Society - which honored her on two occasions with a scholarship.
