Dr. Dorothy A. Idleburg Honored for Dedication to Social Work Education

Dorothy Idleburg plans to develop a master's program in social work at Alcorn State University

ALCORN STATE, MS, July 15, 2011 /Education PR News/ -- Dr. Dorothy Idleburg, Director and Professor at Alcorn State University, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in education.

Dr. Idleburg's successful 36-year career is the result of her longtime desire to work with and provide services to others. She began her affiliation with Alcorn State University as a professor of sociology for four years. She then worked at the Mississippi Division of Medicaid as a bureau director for three years and directed the department of social work at Mississippi Valley State University for four years before returning to Alcorn State University. As a director at the university, she oversees the administration of the social work program for undergraduates and prepares students for graduate school. She also teaches courses on case management, alcohol and drug abuse, and the family, as well as introduction to social work. In the years to come, Dr. Idleburg hopes to get the university's social work program accredited and develop a master's program in social work, as well as acquire additional services to focus on the needs of people in rural areas in southwest Mississippi.

A certified social worker and advanced case manager, Dr. Idleburg earned a master's degree in social work from Washington University in 1979. She went on to receive a Ph.D. in social work from the same institution in 1982. Her professional affiliations include the National Association of Social Workers, Association for Gerontology and Human Development, Association for Addiction Professionals, and Council on Social Work Education. Dr. Idleburg also volunteers her free time with the Mount Charity Baptist Church and National Caucus and Association for Gerontology and Human Development in HBCUs, Inc. In recognition of her professional and philanthropic work, she has been listed in the Who's Who of the Southwest and honored with a Hometown Hero Award and Leadership Jackson Award.

Dr. Idleburg attributes her success to being mentored by great people, including Dr. Dorothy Height, the chief executive officer of the National Council of Negro Women, and Dr. Mary Harper of The National Institute on Mental Health, as well as working with the First National Conference on Older Women, which was cited by the Congressional Record. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, sightseeing, listening to music and reading.
