Francis S. Sgroi Recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for Excellence in Secondary Education

A dedicated teacher for decades, Mr. Sgroi coveted a master's degree — and earned one at age 57

MEDFORD, NJ, August 25, 2011 /Education PR News/ -- Francis Sgroi, Mathematics Department Chairman for Holy Cross High School, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in secondary education.

Teaching five classes, including AP calculus 2, honors precalculus and honors geometry, Mr. Sgroi was well prepared for his current position of mathematics department chairman. He first realized his talent for teaching while tutoring fellow college students, and has now been an educator for 42 years. In 2008, in recognition of both his natural gift and longtime dedication, he was named Teacher of the Year by Holy Cross High School. As mathematics department chairperson, Mr. Sgroi organized and runs the annual seventh- and eighth-grade mathematics competitions at his school. In addition, he was the head coach for the girl's varsity soccer team, the Lady Lancers, at Holy Cross for 17 years. They won the New Jersey State Championships in 1993 and 1995.

In 1969, Mr. Sgroi earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Gannon College, now Gannon University. Thirty-five years later, in 2004, his many years of part-time study culminated in a master's degree in teaching, which he earned, along with an additional 30 credits, from Marygrove College. He also holds a teaching certificate in mathematics for secondary education from the state of New Jersey. He serves as the co-chair of the Math Curriculum Committee and a member of the Diocese Curriculum Committee for the Diocese of Trenton, N.J. In the coming years, Mr. Sgroi intends to continue to spread his knowledge and encouragement, and possibly volunteer in the field of education.
